Hyderabad: Members of student associations and PhD scholars from Osmania University have approached the university authorities with a written request. They are asking the university to conduct its own PhD Category 2 entrance test. According to them, this would provide a fair opportunity for marginalized and first-generation students to pursue higher education.
This request follows a recent notification from Osmania University. The university announced that, starting this academic year, PhD admissions will be based solely on UGC NET scores.
The students argue that relying only on UGC NET scores will limit opportunities and increase inequality. They believe that if Osmania University releases a PhD Category 2 notification allowing admissions without requiring JRF or UGC NET, it would create a more inclusive and fair admission process.
The students highlighted a recent decision by the University of Hyderabad (UoH). UoH decided to withdraw its plan to admit PhD students solely based on UGC NET scores. This decision was influenced by concerns over a UGC NET paper leak that compromised the integrity of the admission process.
Nelli Satya, General Secretary of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) at Osmania University, suggested that Osmania should follow UoH’s example. He emphasized that conducting its own PhD Category 2 entrance test would ensure a fair and secure admission process for all students.
