Wanaparthy is facing serious allegations of corruption within its district education department. Reports indicate that some teachers have held positions at the District Education Office (DEO) for extended periods, claiming ‘additional responsibilities’ while neglecting their schools. The DEO himself is accused of irregularities, with some teacher unions allegedly supporting him while targeting honest educators.
Shockwaves hit the district as the DEO and a union leader attempted to oust the District Common Examination Board (DCEB) secretary. The DEO seems to favor those who pay commissions and do not challenge him, causing unrest among other teacher unions.
Teachers and headmasters are supposed to handle extra duties at the DEO office outside school hours or during emergencies. However, in Wanaparthy, many have completely abandoned school duties. Education officials reportedly overlook this and instead pressure honest workers under the guise of enforcing rules.
Ravinder Reddy, an English assistant at ZPHS Boys School, has been coordinating open school tasks since 2018. He does not teach regular classes and signs an attendance register placed improperly in the DEO office, yet receives his salary from the school. Similarly, Srinivasulu, a bio-science assistant at UPS Rayinipet (Kothakota mandal), has acted as the district science officer since 2019, citing the annual science fair to spend the year in the DEO office, ignoring school duties. He is involved in unrelated activities but is protected by the DEO’s support.
Krishnamurthy, a secondary grade teacher at PS Chintakunta (Panagal mandal), has been working in the DEO office for two years without an official clerk position. He reportedly secured the role through a teacher union’s influence and is accused of leaking sensitive information to the union. Complaints to the DEO and the district collector for his removal have been ignored.
Despite numerous teachers and headmasters serving in the DEO office long term, only the DCEB Secretary faces targeting by a teacher union, allegedly because he opposes corrupt actions.
Both retired and current teachers have reached out to local MLA Thudi Megha Reddy, who promised to take necessary action.
