The Telangana government has approved the second phase of the Godavari works to address Hyderabad’s drinking water needs. This decision was announced on Tuesday.
Dana Kishore, the Principal Secretary of the Municipal Administration Department, stated that Rs 5,560 crore has been allocated for this phase. The project aims to lift Godavari water to Hyderabad and fill the Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs. The government plans to complete these works quickly.
Currently, Hyderabad receives 580 to 600 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) of water from various sources. To meet future needs, the State government plans to supply an additional 170 MGD of water by 2030, using 30 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic) of water from the Godavari River. By 2030, the city’s water demand is expected to rise to 750 MGD, and by 2050, it is projected to reach 1,014 MGD.
Under the first phase of the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Scheme, the Water Board has already diverted 10 TMC of water from the Ellampalli project. The second phase will source an additional 15 TMC of water from the Mallanna Sagar reservoir. Out of this, 10 TMC will be used for the city’s drinking water needs, and 5 TMC will help revive the twin reservoirs and clean the Musi River.
A senior official from the Water Board explained that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this initiative has been prepared by WAPCOS. The project includes the construction of pump houses, substations, and a large pipeline from Mallanna Sagar to Ghanpur. Additionally, a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 780 MLD (Million Liters per Day) will be built at Ghanpur and Shameerpet. Other works include constructing a pumping main from Ghanpur to Muthangi.
The project aims to be completed within two years. Recently, Rs 3,849.10 crore has been allocated for the STPs project, and Rs 5,560 crore has been sanctioned for fresh drinking water supply, cleaning the Musi River, and reviving the twin reservoirs.
