Hyderabad has launched a bold new initiative called “AI-Powered Telangana”, becoming the first state in India to use artificial intelligence (AI) on such a large scale. The goal is to use AI to improve key sectors like education, healthcare, urban development, and agriculture.
This major project brings together government agencies, global tech companies, universities, and investors. Officials describe it as the most ambitious AI plan any Indian state has attempted so far.
As part of this effort, Google will set up India's first Google for Startups Centre in Telangana. The center will support new AI companies and pilot projects for agriculture mobility and job training, based on a new partnership with Google.
A massive 250-acre AI City is being developed within Future City. This area will test smart city technologies. In Hyderabad, a new real-time traffic management system from Google will be tested to reduce congestion.
In agriculture, the new Agriculture Data Exchange (ADEX) platform will collect data on crops, soil, and weather. AI will use this data to predict better yields and help farmers get faster access to loans.
In healthcare, top educational institutes like IIIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Hyderabad, BITS, NALSAR, and ISB will team up with AIG Hospitals and drug company AstraZeneca. Together, they will build India’s own AI-based diagnostic system for use in public hospitals.
To improve education, a new AI center called VISWAM—run by Swecha and IIIT-Hyderabad—will offer 100,000 AI internships, training students in real-world AI skills. Also, Microsoft-backed AI tools will be introduced in 500 schools across the state.
For student safety, the state is launching the MITRA-TG app. Powered by AI, the app will detect early signs of substance abuse among students and alert families and counselors.
Officials believe this initiative will create thousands of new jobs in AI research and development. At the same time, it will raise agricultural output, support smarter cities, and deliver better healthcare.
Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary and CEO of the Industry and Investment Cell in the Chief Minister’s Office, said the state is ready to lead India’s AI revolution. He added that Telangana aims to become the country’s top destination for AI careers and innovation.
