Hyderabad: The Telangana Education Commission (TGEC) held a workshop focused on improving remedial teaching in schools. The event brought together experts, community leaders, and educators to develop a strategy for effective remedial programs across the state.

Akunuri Murali, the Commission’s Chairperson, expressed concern about the gaps in basic learning that affect students’ confidence and future. He pointed out issues like mixed-grade classrooms and inadequate early education support, advocating for significant changes in the teaching system.

Ram Babu from Pratham (Telangana) shared findings from 20 years of ASER data, showing persistent weaknesses in fundamental skills. He suggested that Telangana implement successful models like “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) used in other regions.

R. Venkat Reddy from the MV Foundation highlighted the need for inclusive classrooms that respect learning diversity and child rights, stressing that with the right environment, all children can learn effectively.

Dr. Shikha Takker of Mahindra University warned against quick solutions, promoting research-based methods to strengthen math skills.

Dr. Mythili Sastry, also from Mahindra University, argued against limiting remediation to specific times, urging for year-round support with strong school leadership.

The NGO Pustaka demonstrated how reading sessions and storybooks can close learning gaps. A teacher from Khammam shared success stories from short-term programs, emphasizing personalized teaching and connecting with students emotionally. Many recommended making remedial teaching a regular part of the education system through welfare hostels and full-time tutors.

The workshop ended with a consensus that remedial education should be a permanent part of schooling, not just a temporary fix. Participants agreed that this change is crucial for achieving fair and lasting education for all children in Telangana.

Commission members Prof. P.L.V. Rao and Dr. Charakonda Venkatesh attended, reaffirming their dedication to comprehensive educational reform.
