Hyderabad – State Fire Service Director General Nagi Reddy has called for stronger coordination among departments to stop fire accidents. He stressed the need for clear fire safety rules that each department must follow, especially in older buildings.
At a meeting held at the GHMC headquarters on Friday, top officials including GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, District Collector Anudeep Durisetty, and representatives from Electricity, Town Planning, HYDRA, and Fire Safety departments discussed urgent fire safety measures.
The meeting came in response to a recent massive fire at Gulzar House, which shook local residents. Following the incident, citizens have demanded stricter fire safety steps in historic buildings and commercial areas. They urged authorities to crack down on property owners who ignore safety norms.
Electrical department officials were asked to ensure that private electricians and linemen are trained to use the right equipment to avoid short circuits, especially in heritage buildings. The DISCOM Chief Engineer was also urged to launch a step-by-step training program to educate owners of electrical shops about safe practices.
Town planning authorities were directed to issue trade licenses and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) only after confirming that fire safety systems are in place. Nagi Reddy announced that the fire department will hold monthly awareness campaigns to educate the public about fire prevention.
RV Karnan said the GHMC will soon begin a detailed survey of old and unsafe buildings. Based on the Fire Department’s advice, strict actions will follow to improve safety in commercial spaces and business centers.
Officials in the town planning department were told to give top priority to fire safety when reviewing new building plans. They must ensure all new constructions meet fire safety standards before approval.
District Collector Anudeep Durisetty pointed out another issue. He said that during fire incidents, only the fire and police departments are usually informed. He stressed the importance of also notifying revenue-related departments to ensure a better coordinated response.
The meeting ended with a firm decision: all departments must act together to prevent future fires and protect lives and property in Hyderabad.
