In Hyderabad, the Telangana High Court addressed a case involving traffic fines. Justice N V Shravan Kumar instructed the city’s Joint Commissioner of Police and traffic police to reply to a notice within a week.

V Raghavendra Chary, who works in the private sector, was upset after receiving a large traffic fine. The police fined him Rs.1,200 for “triple riding” on his two-wheeler. He argued that, according to Section 177 of the MV Act, 1988, fines for such offenses should only be between Rs.100-300. When he asked why the fine was so high, he got no answer.

Vijay Gopal, the lawyer, argued that the police were issuing excessive fines to raise money, which went against current rules. He suggested that the police focus more on managing traffic instead of issuing heavy fines. After hearing these arguments, Justice Kumar asked the government pleader (home) to ensure the police provide an explanation.
