Nagarkurnool district witnessed heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening, bringing distress to local farmers who had just completed their harvest.
Many farmers had transported their paddy to the Nellikonda Agricultural Market Yard, where the grain was laid out in the open to dry. The sudden downpour caught them off guard, soaking their entire produce.
Both maize and paddy suffered serious damage. The unexpected rain left the grains wet and possibly unfit for sale. Farmers stood helplessly as their hard-earned harvest lay drenched. Some were seen openly weeping, overwhelmed by the loss.
The unseasonal showers came at a critical time, just after harvest and before procurement. Without proper storage or shelter at the market yard, the crops had no protection from the weather.
Now, farmers are pleading with the government to step in. They are asking officials to purchase the rain-damaged grain and provide financial compensation to help recover from the sudden setback.
This incident highlights the urgent need for better infrastructure at market yards and prompt support systems for farmers impacted by climate-related surprises.
