The United States is urging the World Health Organization (WHO) to allow Taiwan to participate as an observer at its annual meeting in Geneva from May 21-30. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, believes that inviting Taiwan would show the WHO’s commitment to an inclusive and collaborative approach to international health cooperation. Blinken added that US support for Taiwanese participation is in line with Washington’s one-China policy. China has previously opposed Taiwan’s involvement in the WHO due to its position on the “One China” policy.

Taiwan has been invited to participate in previous WHA meetings but has been excluded due to China’s objections. Blinken argued that Taiwan’s exclusion is unjustified and undermines global public health cooperation and security. Despite China considering Taiwan to be a part of its territory and not a separate sovereign state, Blinken praised Taiwan as a highly capable, engaged, and responsible member of the global health community.
