The long-pending demand for a comprehensive Underground Drainage (UGD) and Sewage Treatment system in Warangal has finally moved a major step closer to reality. The Telangana Government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the ambitious project, estimated at ₹5,157 crore, under the state’s long-term urban development roadmap Vision–2057.
The project aims to transform sanitation infrastructure across the Greater Warangal region, addressing decades-old drainage and sewage challenges in the historic city of Orugallu.
Tri-City Coverage: Kazipet, Hanumakonda & Warangal
The approved UGD project will cover the entire Warangal Tri-City area, including:
- Warangal
- Hanumakonda
- Kazipet
- 42 recently merged surrounding villages
This comprehensive coverage ensures that both core urban areas and newly merged peri-urban regions are brought under a modern sewage management system.
Project Scale and Technical Details
The DPR outlines a large-scale, zoned implementation of underground drainage and sewage treatment infrastructure:
- 9 Underground Drainage (UGD) zones
- 21 Sewage Treatment zones
- UGD coverage: 2,739 sq km
- Sewage pipeline network: 740 sq km
- Total sewage connections planned: 2.94 lakh households
The project will include modern sewage pipelines, pumping stations, and sewage treatment plants (STPs) designed to meet future population growth and environmental standards.
Minister’s Directive: Tenders Within a Week
Minister for Municipal Administration Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy Garu has directed officials to initiate the tendering process within a week, signaling urgency in execution.
According to officials, Phase-1 works worth ₹1,000 crore will be taken up first, focusing on high-density and critical zones that currently face severe drainage and sanitation issues.
Why the Project Is Critical for Warangal
Warangal has long struggled with:
- Open drains and sewage overflow
- Seasonal flooding during monsoons
- Groundwater contamination risks
- Public health and hygiene concerns
The absence of a unified underground drainage system has been a major civic issue despite Warangal’s historical importance and growing urban population. The new UGD project is expected to significantly improve urban hygiene, environmental protection, and quality of life.
Aligned With Vision–2057 Urban Development Plan
The Warangal UGD project is part of the Telangana government’s Vision–2057, which focuses on:
- Long-term urban infrastructure planning
- Sustainable water and waste management
- Climate-resilient cities
- Balanced regional development beyond Hyderabad
By investing in large-scale sanitation infrastructure, the government aims to position Warangal as a future-ready tier-2 city with modern civic amenities.
A Long-Awaited Dream for Orugallu
For residents of Warangal, Hanumakonda, and Kazipet, the DPR approval marks the fulfillment of a long-standing public demand. Civic activists and local representatives have repeatedly raised the need for an integrated sewage system over the years.
With DPR approval, funding clarity, and political push now in place, the Warangal Underground Drainage project is expected to move swiftly from planning to execution, bringing a permanent solution to one of the city’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.
The project is being closely monitored by the state government to ensure timely execution and quality implementation.
