Rangareddy: The Osmansagar reservoir, located on the outskirts of the city, is currently seeing more water inflows than its neighbor, Himayatsagar. This is unusual, as Himayatsagar typically receives the bulk of inflows, especially during the rainy season.
In the past, the HMWS&SB officials often managed the crest gates at Himayatsagar due to heavy water inflows from the catchment areas. Osmansagar usually remained dry, with only a few of its gates lifted at the end of the season.
Himayatsagar, which has 17 crest gates, frequently reaches full capacity during the rains, requiring regular adjustments of the gates. In contrast, Osmansagar rarely experiences such flooding.
This season is different. Osmansagar, with its 15 gates, is now receiving significant inflows. For the first time, officials have lifted nearly all of Osmansagar’s gates to release water into the Musi River. Although the inflow is less than that of Himayatsagar, this marks a rare occurrence.
Recently, officials lifted more gates at Osmansagar than at Himayatsagar, a noteworthy change. On Monday, eight gates at Osmansagar were opened to release water, compared to just two at Himayatsagar. Although four gates were closed the next morning, the rest remained open to manage the water flow. By Tuesday night, 10 gates were lifted again due to increased inflows.
Currently, Osmansagar is receiving about 700 cusecs of inflow, which is being directed into the Musi. On Tuesday, 10 gates at Osmansagar stayed open to release excess water. Meanwhile, only three gates were open at Himayatsagar. The water level at Osmansagar stands at 1789.20 feet, close to its full capacity of 1790 feet. Himayatsagar’s level is at 1762.45 feet, nearing its full capacity of 1763.50 feet.
