Hyderabad: In a major push to tackle congestion in one of the city’s busiest corridors, authorities have drawn up a ₹120 crore traffic improvement plan for the stretch between Shaikpet Flyover and Masab Tank. The initiative aims to transform the route into a model traffic corridor with better road infrastructure, smoother vehicle movement, and improved pedestrian safety.

The plan was finalised following a joint field inspection by senior officials, including Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, who reviewed key problem areas along the route.

Key Bottlenecks Identified

During the inspection, officials flagged several critical issues affecting traffic flow. Major concerns included waterlogging at Shaikpet Flyover ramps and Tolichowki, along with heavy congestion at junctions such as NMDC and Nanal Nagar.

Authorities have instructed departments to clear obstructions, streamline junctions, and speed up pending works to reduce daily traffic snarls.

Phased Plan with ₹120 Crore Budget

The project will be executed in phases, with solutions divided into immediate and long-term measures. Out of the total allocation, approximately ₹20 crore will be spent in each zone to address localised traffic and infrastructure challenges.

Officials also indicated that pending works near KBR Park and surrounding areas are expected to be completed within the next 18 to 24 months.

Focus on Pedestrian Safety

Several measures have been planned to improve pedestrian movement and safety, especially in the Tolichowki stretch:

  • Construction of a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Brindavan Colony
  • Installation of pelican signals and zebra crossings at key points
  • Development of safer crossing zones near busy junctions

  • Widening of roads between Rethibowli and Nanal Nagar
  • Creation of a free left turn at Balika Bhavan towards Tolichowki
  • Removal of selected obstructions, trees, and structures affecting road width

Encroachments and bottlenecks along the corridor will be cleared to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement.

Major Upgrades in Asif Nagar–Masab Tank Stretch

The second half of the corridor, covering Asif Nagar and Masab Tank, will see additional infrastructure upgrades:

  • New FOB near SD Eye Hospital
  • Road widening through land acquisition near NMDC
  • Installation of height barriers and warning systems on the Masab Tank Flyover
  • Shifting of utilities, such as transformers, to reduce bottlenecks
  • Development of a new slip road to improve internal connectivity

Relief Expected for Daily Commuters

The Shaikpet–Masab Tank route is a key link connecting IT corridors, residential areas, and central Hyderabad, and currently faces heavy congestion during peak hours.
