Hyderabad police have ramped up efforts to tackle drunk driving, especially during weekends. In a recent crackdown, Cyberabad Traffic Police caught 306 drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. These checks were carried out at multiple points under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate.
Out of the 306 offenders, 246 were riding two-wheelers, nine were driving auto-rickshaws, 50 were behind the wheel of cars, and one was operating a heavy vehicle. Shockingly, 32 drivers had dangerously high blood alcohol levels—ranging from 200 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
The highest number of cases came from the Miyapur zone with 51 violations, followed by RC Puram with 34, Balanagar with 26, and Shamshabad and Jeedimetla, each reporting 24 cases.
Simultaneously, the Hyderabad Traffic Police launched a separate operation between May 10 and 16, during which they booked 807 people for drunk driving. Among them, 696 were two-wheeler riders, 39 were auto drivers, 71 were car drivers, and one was a heavy vehicle operator.
Police noted that 42 individuals had extremely high BAC levels over 200 mg/100 ml. What’s more concerning is the age of the offenders. 19 were between 18 and 20 years old, indicating cases of underage drinking. The largest group of violators—304 people—were aged 21 to 33. Another 278 offenders were between 31 and 40 years old, while 147 were aged 41 to 50.
Police are now addressing not just drunk driving but also underage alcohol consumption. While traffic officers handle the driving offenses, the law and order police will investigate where these young individuals are getting alcohol.
Authorities issued a strong warning: If someone drives drunk and causes a fatal accident, they could be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a hefty fine.
Police urge citizens to avoid drinking and driving. They stress that violating the law not only risks lives but can also lead to severe legal consequences.
