Hyderabad: VC Sajjanar, the City Police Commissioner of Hyderabad, has issued a serious warning about food adulteration. He declared that it will now be equated with ‘Attempt to Murder’. This announcement came during a high-level meeting, where Sajjanar emphasized that these actions are not minor violations but serious crimes threatening lives.
The meeting took place at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre in Banjara Hills. The strategy now targets not just street vendors but also large manufacturing and processing units. To tackle this, Sajjanar revealed the creation of specialized joint task forces. These teams will include police and Food Safety officials working together.
Sajjanar emphasized a zero-tolerance stance against endangering citizens. A new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being developed to ensure raids and arrests are legally sound. Repeat offenders will face the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, risking permanent revocation of trade licenses.
To combat the “adulteration mafia,” a new WhatsApp number and toll-free helpline will be launched. These will allow the public to report issues while keeping informants’ identities confidential. Traders must adhere to quality standards or face legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Food Safety and Standards Act. The meeting included senior officers like Additional CP M Srinivasulu, Joint CP D Joel Davis, and DCPs from all zones, as well as directors and inspectors from the Food Safety Wing.
