Hyderabad – As part of the Miss World 2025 pageant, 25 contestants from the African region visited the famous handloom village of Pochampally in Telangana, India. This visit was designed to give the participants a firsthand experience of India’s deep-rooted textile traditions.
Located in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, Pochampally is known worldwide for its unique Ikat weaving. This traditional craft uses age-old methods to create stunning patterns on silk and cotton fabrics. The village is part of a cluster of 80 villages where skilled artisans continue to practice and preserve this heritage.
The tour is part of Telangana’s cultural showcase during the pageant. Organizers want to highlight the importance of supporting local weavers and promoting the global reputation of Indian handlooms. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has recognized Pochampally as one of the best tourist villages in the world.
The contestants received a warm welcome with traditional dance performances and ceremonial tilak. The lively music and colorful attire gave them a vibrant introduction to the local culture.
The group visited the Pochampally Handloom Park Museum, where they watched weavers at work. They saw how threads are dyed and woven into complex Ikat patterns using handlooms. This live demonstration helped the visitors appreciate the skill and patience behind every piece of fabric.
To deepen their cultural experience, the delegates also enjoyed mehndi art and live performances by local musicians. These activities added a personal touch to their journey through Telangana’s artistic traditions.
The visit also included an audio-visual presentation by Telangana Tourism. The film explained the history and importance of the state’s handloom industry and its efforts to preserve these crafts in modern times.
Julia Morley, CEO of the Miss World Organisation, praised the visit. “Pochampally is a shining example of India’s textile legacy,” she said. “Watching the contestants engage with the local artisans and understand their craft is truly inspiring. It reminds us of the value in preserving these timeless traditions.”
The village is also historically important. Known as Bhoodan Pochampally, it played a key role in the Bhoodan Movement, launched by Acharya Vinoba Bhave. This movement promoted land redistribution and community welfare, adding another layer of meaning to the village’s legacy.
As the Miss World 2025 pageant continues, contestants will explore more of Telangana’s rich culture, discovering the crafts, music, and traditions that shape India’s diverse identity.
