Hyderabad — The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has launched a strong protest against the new Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. As part of its nationwide campaign, the Board has called for a unique protest named ‘Batti Gul’ on April 30.
Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of AIMPLB and AIMIM chief, asked the people of Hyderabad to support this movement. He urged everyone to turn off their lights at home and in shops for 15 minutes from 9 pm to 9:15 pm on Wednesday, to express their disagreement with the new law.
Owaisi said the Act goes against the basic rights granted by the Indian Constitution, especially Articles 14, 15, 25, and 26. He called the law a “black act” and accused the government of interfering in religious matters through this legislation.
“This protest is to show the Prime Minister that people will not stay silent when their fundamental rights are being taken away,” said Owaisi. He urged the public to peacefully make their voices heard.
This protest comes just days after a large public gathering titled ‘Save Waqf, Save Constitution’ took place in Hyderabad. The rally, supported by AIMIM, drew thousands of people, along with leaders from other political parties such as the Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
During the public meeting at Darussalam, AIMIM’s headquarters, on April 19, the AIMPLB announced its plan for a series of protests across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The Board also revealed plans for more protests, including round table discussions, women’s gatherings at Eidgah Bilali, human chain events, and sit-ins. These protests aim to raise awareness and rally public support against the law.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in Parliament earlier this month. It was passed in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on April 2 and 3, and received the President’s approval on April 5, officially becoming law.
However, the law has faced strong opposition. Asaduddin Owaisi and others have already challenged it in the Supreme Court, arguing that it violates the Constitution and Muslim community rights.
The AIMPLB’s campaign continues to gain momentum, as more groups join the call to protect religious freedom and constitutional values in India.
