HYDRAA's Efforts to Revive Hyderabad's Lakes
AV Ranganath, the Commissioner of HYDRAA, is leading efforts to rejuvenate lakes in Hyderabad. He recently visited several sites to assess progress and ensure the success of water conservation projects.
During his visits, Ranganath inspected the restoration work at Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet and Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula in the Old City. These efforts are transforming the lakes, earning HYDRAA praise from the community.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of restoring lakes to prevent floods and to serve as ecological and recreational areas for the city. Residents are pleased with the lake restoration, noting the positive impact on their surroundings.
Ranganath took a close look at the conditions of Bathukamma Kunta, focusing on rainwater channels and the separation of stormwater from sewage. The Bathukamma festival highlighted the community’s appreciation for the project, referring to it as revitalizing their area.
Locals noticed the return of migratory birds and waterfowl, signaling ecological recovery. They requested a new community hall near the lake, and Ranganath assured them that their proposal would be considered.
Addressing illegal dumping at the Musi River, the Commissioner stated that those responsible received warnings to clear the debris within a week or face legal action.
At Bum-Rukn-ud-Daula, Ranganath evaluated the lake’s condition. Originally 18 acres, the lake had shrunk significantly due to encroachment and debris. The HYDRAA team is actively working to restore the lake to its original size by removing accumulated soil.
Future Plans for Community Spaces
HYDRAA plans to develop walking paths, play areas, and green spaces around the lakes. Commissioner Ranganath explained that these projects aim to protect water bodies while providing vibrant public spaces for residents.
