Hyderabad: The demand for a ‘Chintan Baithak’ (introspection meeting), similar to what was held during YSR’s time, is growing within the Congress party. This comes after the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Despite efforts by the State leadership to appear victorious in the elections, there is discontentment within the party high command over the results. Leaders are now talking about the need to introspect before it is too late. Questions are being raised about why the Congress, which had come to power in the State, lost the opportunity to win maximum seats and lost ground to the BJP within a few months.
There is growing unease among senior party members. They believe that if the issues are not addressed soon, the party will continue to lose ground in future elections, including local body elections. The BJP has been gaining vote share substantially in these elections compared to the Assembly polls. This is a cause for concern, especially since most voters in local bodies are from the farming community.
In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is not far behind the Congress in terms of vote share. The BJP’s vote share has increased significantly within months, while the Congress’ share has remained almost the same. This shift in voting patterns is a worrying trend for the Congress party.
As the term of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy as PCC chief comes to an end this month, it is likely that a new leader will take over who can focus solely on organizational matters. However, some leaders have pointed out that at the national level, reviews and introspection meetings are crucial for moving forward with winning strategies. In the past, similar meetings were held in Hyderabad during YSR’s time and after the formation of Telangana. But in recent years, such meetings have been lacking, which has raised concerns among party members.
