The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called for strict action to stop violence against women and girls. They also demanded equal pay for equal work. This demand was made at a meeting held at the CITU district office on International Women’s Day.
CITU District Assistant Secretary Padma spoke at the event and criticized the increasing violence against women. She blamed both the central and state governments for not taking strong measures to address these issues.
Padma reminded everyone that International Women’s Day started because of the struggles of women workers in the early 20th century. These women fought against exploitation, poor working conditions, and unfair treatment. She expressed concern that corporate powers and capitalists are now diverting attention from the true meaning of Women’s Day.
She also accused the government of failing to protect women from violence and workplace discrimination. Women still face labor exploitation and gender inequality at work. She criticized the authorities for only providing temporary solutions instead of making long-term changes to prevent workplace harassment.
Padma stated that governments should not celebrate Women’s Day unless they ensure equal pay, remove gender discrimination, and implement women’s reservations. She encouraged women to come together and fight for their rights, just as women in the past had done.
Several leaders, including Sunitha, Pushpavati, Radha, Lakshmi, Sarika, Abheda, and Saraswati, participated in the event. CITU District Secretary VV Narasimha and District Vice President Upper Narasimha were also present.
