Hyderabad: Heavy rains on Thursday caused flooding in many parts of Hyderabad, especially in low-lying areas. This led to major disruptions in daily life across the city. On Friday, GHMC Commissioner K Ilambarithi, along with other officials, visited the rain-affected areas in Tolichowki to assess the damage.
During the visit, the Commissioner instructed officials to create a full action plan to find a permanent solution to the city’s flooding problems. The inspection focused on the floodwaters flowing from Hakimpet area in Tolichowki, located in the Jubilee Hills ward. He was joined by Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi, SE Ratnakar, and other staff during the visit.
Engineering officials explained that floodwater from Banjara Hills MLA Colony and Lotus Pond flows through Hakimpet into Balkam Cheruvu. Local residents said that the area did not flood like this in the past. They believe that the new HMDA layout, which replaced green spaces and trees, has worsened the flooding. They are worried that this situation will only get worse due to soil erosion from the layout.
Commissioner Ilambarithi ordered that the flood-affected soil be removed immediately. He also directed the engineering team to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to develop a long-term solution to prevent such flooding in the future.
In another incident on Friday, a lightning strike hit an apartment in Tarnaka. The NVR Snigdha apartment was struck by lightning, causing a loud noise and some damage to a wall on the 5th floor.
Residents of the apartment said they heard a thunderous sound when the lightning hit. The wall cracked and some bricks fell into the garden. Fortunately, no one was hurt, as no one was in the area at the time of the lightning strike.
