Hyderabad is working hard to become a beggar-free city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), along with the Police and Revenue Departments, has started a new campaign to remove beggars from busy streets and public spots. So far, special teams have identified over 221 people, and 19 have been moved.
Pedestrians and drivers face issues with beggars at traffic signals. To address this, GHMC has initiated a special plan to help them. Identified individuals will be relocated to GHMC shelters where they will receive skill training to help them become self-reliant.
Following orders from GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, beggars in areas like Basheer Bagh, Secretariat, Nampally, Begum Bazar, and others are being identified. Many are being moved to GHMC-run shelters, while others are being advised and sent back to their hometowns.
For the past few days, this effort has intensified under the GHMC Urban Community Department. With information about beggars at major crossroads and religious sites, the police assist in moving them to shelters after health checks.
An officer mentioned that special teams have been set up, identifying 221 people: 173 men, 37 women, and 11 children. So far, 19 have been relocated to GHMC shelters, and the rest have been counseled and returned to their families.
The relocation of beggars and those on sidewalks to shelters or back to their families will persist. GHMC UCD officials have formed special teams to continue this effort.
