The Telangana government has extended the accidental insurance scheme to gig and platform workers in the state, providing coverage of Rs 5 lakh. This scheme was previously available for transport and non-transport auto drivers, home guards, and working journalists. The state government will cover the entire cost of the premium for the accidental insurance.
The Commissioner of Transport has been designated as the master policyholder, and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors of the Transport Department will be responsible for registering and receiving claims from gig and platform workers.
The decision to extend the scheme was made a week after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met with gig workers and announced that the government would provide social security to workers in the unorganized sectors. He also promised Rs 10 lakh health cover under the Rajiv Arogyasri Scheme.
Additionally, the Chief Minister pledged to study the existing policy for gig workers in Rajasthan and introduce an effective law in the next budget session. As a gesture of support, he provided Rs 2 lakh financial assistance to the family of a food delivery executive who tragically died four months ago.
During the recent Telangana Assembly elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promised to consider legislation for the welfare of gig workers if voted to power. He assured gig workers that the Chief Minister and relevant ministers would hold discussions with them to determine appropriate welfare measures.
These initiatives aim to provide greater security and support for gig and platform workers in Telangana.
