The Indian government has approved the next phase of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) in Hyderabad. This expansion will cost Rs 1,169 crore and is meant to improve suburban train services in the city.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the project will add six new railway lines, covering a total of 102.4 kilometers. It also includes upgrades to the current infrastructure to make urban travel smoother for passengers.
The South Central Railway (SCR) will be in charge of carrying out the project. One key part of the plan is to add more tracks to the 12-kilometer Ghatkesar–Moula Ali C-Cabin section, which will help trains move more efficiently. The 1.4-kilometer Falaknuma–Umdanagar line and the 22-kilometer Sanathnagar–Moula Ali bypass will also be doubled to handle more train traffic.
Other improvements include a new 5-kilometer rail link between Tellapur and Ramachandrapuram. Additionally, the 14-kilometer Medchal–Bollarum line will be doubled, and the 15-kilometer Secunderabad–Bollarum route will be electrified.
Another major part of the project is the construction of a new third railway line from Ghatkesar to Yadadri, covering 33 kilometers. This will improve train connectivity in the eastern parts of Hyderabad.
However, officials have said that the Telangana state government still needs to contribute its pending share of Rs 279 crore. This is necessary to make sure the project moves forward on time.
