A major cybersecurity breach has compromised WhatsApp groups of Telangana ministers and media personnel after hackers gained access through a reporter’s phone. The cyber criminals are now spreading malicious messages disguised as official communications from the State Bank of India.

The attack began when one journalist’s mobile phone was compromised, providing hackers entry into multiple WhatsApp media groups that include government ministers and officials from Telangana. The breach has raised serious concerns about digital security among government circles.

The hackers are distributing messages that appear to be from SBI Bank, asking recipients to update their Aadhaar details. These fraudulent messages contain APK files that claim to facilitate the Aadhaar update process. APK files are Android application packages that, when installed, can give hackers complete access to a user’s device.

The cyber criminals have strategically exploited the trust associated with two of India’s most recognized institutions. By combining the names “SBI” and “Aadhaar” in their messages, the hackers are banking on the blind trust citizens place in these official entities.

Security experts warn that downloading and installing such APK files from unknown sources can compromise personal data, banking information, and provide unauthorized access to the entire device. The malicious software can steal passwords, financial details, and even take control of messaging applications.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of even high-profile government communication channels to cyber attacks. WhatsApp groups containing ministers and senior officials are considered sensitive platforms where confidential information is often shared.

Cybersecurity specialists emphasize that legitimate banks, including State Bank of India, never ask customers to download APK files or update Aadhaar details through WhatsApp messages. All official communications from banks are conducted through verified channels such as official apps, websites, or physical branches.

The compromised reporter’s phone has become a gateway for spreading the malware across multiple government and media groups in Telangana. This chain reaction demonstrates how a single security breach can rapidly escalate into a widespread cyber attack affecting numerous high-profile individuals.

Authorities are investigating the breach and have advised all members of the affected groups to avoid clicking on any suspicious links or downloading APK files, regardless of how authentic the source may appear.
