Hyderabad: T Harish Rao, a senior leader from the BRS, has raised concerns about the unfair treatment of Telangana students in PG medical admissions. He has urged for the cancellation of the current admission notification and the creation of a new policy that protects the interests of local students.
In an open letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Harish Rao highlighted the issue of Telangana students losing PG seats. He blamed the state government’s negligence for this problem. The management quota seats, filled without local reservation, are causing hundreds of Telangana students to miss out on opportunities.
Telangana has 1,801 PG medical seats. Half of these are under the all-India quota. The remaining half, under the state quota, includes about 450 seats under the management quota. These seats are going to all-India candidates since local reservation is not applied.
In Andhra Pradesh, 85% of management quota seats are reserved for local students, benefiting them greatly. However, Telangana lacks a similar policy. Consequently, students from other states are taking seats meant for Telangana students. About 450 seats are going to all-India candidates, and Telangana students are losing 382 seats due to this oversight. If Telangana adopts a reservation policy like Andhra Pradesh, only 68 out of the 450 seats would go to non-locals, with 382 seats available for Telangana students.
During the BRS regime, rules were changed to reserve 100% of seats in colleges established after June 2, 2014, for Telangana students, showing a commitment to their future. Rao criticized the current Congress government for failing to do the same and risking the future of local students.
Rao demanded the immediate implementation of an 85% local reservation for management quota seats. He called for the cancellation of the current PG admission notification and the issuance of a new policy to protect Telangana students’ interests.
