The Cyber Crime Police, Hyderabad has issued a public advisory urging citizens to stay alert as Christmas and New Year celebrations approach. Authorities warn that cyber fraudsters are exploiting festive offers and increased online activity to target unsuspecting people.

According to the advisory issued by V. Aravind Babu, IPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, Hyderabad City, scammers intensify their activities during the festive season when people are busy shopping online, booking travel, and participating in celebrations.

Common Cyber Scams to Watch Out For

The police have identified several types of frauds that typically surge during the festive period. These include unknown links and fake APKs sent through WhatsApp, SMS, or email. Fraudsters also operate lottery, gift, cashback, and lucky draw scams to lure victims.

Other common scams involve fake New Year party or event passes, fraudulent travel, hotel, and resort bookings, and fake cab or rental services. Criminals also exploit people’s goodwill by creating fake charity or donation appeals.

The advisory further highlights fake job and part-time work offers, along with fraudulent refund, bonus, and discount messages that trick people into sharing sensitive information.

The advisory emphasizes avoiding unknown QR codes and UPI requests. Users are advised to enable two-factor authentication on their accounts and keep all applications updated with the latest security patches.

If someone falls victim to cyber fraud, immediate action is crucial. Victims should report the incident at www.cybercrime.gov.in or call the helpline number 1930.

It is important to preserve all evidence including screenshots, transaction details, and contact numbers of the fraudsters. This information helps authorities in tracking down criminals and potentially recovering lost funds.
