Hyderabad: The city had plans to create new dumping yards, but it seems these plans have not moved forward. Because of this, the Jawaharnagar dump yard is once again causing problems for nearby residents. For the past five days, people living around the dump yard have been struggling to sleep because of the terrible smell that is always in the air.
Earlier this year, the State government announced plans to set up four new dump yards in different parts of the city and its outskirts. Some of the locations they considered were Pyarnagar, Khanapur, Dundigal, and Pashamylaram in Medak district. However, no progress has been made since then. As a result, the entire city’s garbage, which is about 8,000 tonnes daily, is still being sent to the Jawaharnagar dump yard. This has caused serious pollution in the air, soil, and groundwater in the surrounding areas.
Residents have tried to get the attention of officials by submitting complaints and holding protests, but nothing has changed. The situation has been getting worse. While the bad smell used to be occasional, it has now become constant over the past five days. One reason for this could be that the workers have stopped using chemicals that help control the smell and kill bacteria. Because of this, many people in the area are falling ill due to water-borne diseases.
Sandeep, a local resident, shared his frustration, saying, “We have suffered for many years because of the dump yard. Things were getting a bit better, but now, for the past five days, the smell has become unbearable. We can hardly breathe, and we have to keep our doors and windows closed. It seems like the officials have stopped using the chemicals, and we are the ones suffering because of it.”
Another resident, Ramu, added, “The State government has only been giving us false promises and has not taken any real steps to move the dump yard. We are living in terrible conditions every day. It’s time the officials come up with a permanent solution to help the residents.”
