Karimnagar: The Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar collected over ₹42 crore in taxes during the financial year 2023–2024.
There are more than one lakh property assessments in the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation area, including nearby merged villages. The total tax demand for the year was over ₹52.65 crore. By 9 p.m. on March 31, officials had collected more than ₹42 crore.
Out of ₹17 crore in old pending dues, ₹10 crore was recovered. In just one day during the last week of March, nearly ₹2 crore in taxes was collected. Municipal Commissioner Chahat Bajpai led a special 30-day drive to target people who had not paid their taxes on time.
This strict tax recovery effort became a hot topic in the area. Officials sent advance notices to tax defaulters, and in some cases, they locked or seized properties when people failed to respond. For example, ₹87 lakh was due from 36 properties in Revenue Gardens and Club Varidhi, and some payments were made after notices were issued.
Karimnagar Dairy had unpaid taxes of ₹38 lakh and was made to pay the full amount. Venkatasai Theater also paid ₹19 lakh in dues to avoid seizure. Around 150 municipal employees worked in the field to collect these long-pending dues.
Commissioner Bajpai is being praised for his efforts in recovering unpaid house taxes and other dues. Notices were even sent to 720 Central and State government offices, and their pending taxes were collected.
Bajpai said the tax collection efforts would continue. For the 2025–2026 financial year, a 5% discount will be given under the Early Bird Scheme for those who pay in April. This year, Karimnagar collected 81% more taxes than required to receive funds from the 15th Finance Commission.
