Hyderabad: Minister Danasari Anasuya (Seethakka) praised transgender traffic assistants for their excellent work in the city, which has received widespread approval. She highlighted that other states and the central government are also adopting similar initiatives.
The minister announced plans to provide the transgender community with Indiramma houses under the disability quota. She also mentioned the creation of Maitri Clinics in districts and promised more job opportunities in various departments for them.
At a review meeting, City Police Commissioner CV Anand proudly stated that no complaints have been filed against the transgender traffic assistants in the past six months. He believes they will become role models for the country, with Telangana leading in offering employment to transgenders.
Anand encouraged those interested in private security jobs and stressed the importance of performing duties well to gain a good reputation and further government support. He praised everyone for their cooperation and for earning a positive image in society.
He noted that the recruitment process for transgenders was completed in just 10 days in December, following directives from CM A Revanth Reddy. Currently, 38 traffic assistants work with the city police traffic department. Officials observed that these assistants collaborate well with police station staff and handle their duties diligently, joining in traffic management duties alongside other personnel. Despite facing societal challenges, they manage traffic duties comfortably.
The traffic assistants and NGOs thanked the CM for recognizing them after 76 years. They reported performing their duties without issues and receiving respect from fellow officers. They shared that while they once feared the police, they now feel honored to work alongside them. They requested similar facilities to those provided to home guards and appreciated receiving the same uniform, symbolizing equal treatment.
In December 2024, the government appointed 44 transgenders as traffic assistants in Hyderabad. Telangana is the first state to include transgenders in government jobs.
