Hyderabad is preparing for a major protest march on May 31 as the Muslim Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh rallies against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act-2025.
The march, called the “Telangana March to Rollback Waqf Amendment Act-2025,” will be held at Dharna Chowk in Hyderabad. It was officially confirmed after a core committee meeting at the headquarters of Tahreek Muslim Shabban in Azampura.
Mohammed Mushtaq Malik, the president of Tahreek Muslim Shabban and JAC convenor, announced that people from across Telangana’s districts will join the protest. According to him, the goal is to put pressure on the central government to cancel the law, which many believe threatens Muslim religious properties and institutions.
Malik said the demonstration will surpass even the massive protests held in 2019 against the CAA and NRC. He emphasized that the event will be peaceful and inclusive. “All major political parties except the BJP—including the Congress, BRS, CPI, and CPM—have extended their support,” he said. Leaders from religious, educational, and social organizations are also expected to participate.
Protesters argue that the Waqf Amendment Act puts important sites like mosques, dargahs, graveyards, madrasas, Ashoorkhanas, and Eidgahs at risk. They fear the new law gives the government more control over Waqf properties, which are meant to serve the community.
Organizers are calling on both Muslims and non-Muslims to stand together in defense of minority rights and the Indian Constitution. The march is shaping up to be one of the largest public demonstrations in recent years in Hyderabad.
