In Hyderabad, physiotherapists are no longer allowed to use the title “Dr.” before their names. This decision was made by the Director General of Health Services, part of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Sunita Sharma, the Director General, responded to multiple complaints from various groups, including the Indian Association of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IAPMR). These organizations objected to physiotherapists using “Dr.” and “PT” with their names.
The issue stems from the Competency Based Curriculum for Physiotherapy – Approved Syllabus 2025, published by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). This syllabus, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, had recommended using “Dr.” for physiotherapists.
However, concerns were raised that physiotherapists are not trained as medical doctors. Using “Dr.” could confuse patients and the public, possibly leading to incorrect treatments.
Physiotherapists should only treat patients referred to them and are not qualified to diagnose conditions. Incorrect physiotherapy could worsen some medical issues.
In light of this, the use of “Dr.” in the physiotherapy curriculum has been ordered to be removed immediately. A new, clear title for physiotherapy graduates and postgraduates will be considered to avoid any confusion.
