Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic Police have taken strict action against underage driving in the city. Between April 5 and April 22, they booked 1,275 cases involving minors who were caught driving. As a result, the registration of 35 vehicles has been cancelled for one year.
The police said that any minor caught driving will not be allowed to get a driving license until they turn 25 years old. This rule is part of the enforcement to discourage underage driving.
Officials also mentioned that they have asked the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) to cancel the registration of all vehicles involved in these cases. So far, 35 vehicles have been deregistered, and more cancellations are being processed.
D Joel Davis, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), explained that under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is illegal for anyone below the legal age to drive a motor vehicle. He also said that both the minor and the vehicle owner or guardian can face serious legal consequences if caught.
The Traffic Police have requested parents and guardians not to let their children drive. They warned that underage driving is dangerous and can put not only the minor’s life at risk but also the lives of others on the road.
