Four children were killed in Rayagada district when an under-construction culvert collapsed on them while they were bathing. The incident happened on July 31 in Uparsaja village in Kalyansinghpur block. The incident caused public outrage as it was discovered that the contractor had entrusted the construction of the culvert to an inexperienced sub-contractor.

Rayagada is currently undergoing several development projects. However, these projects often lack proper supervision, resulting in sub-standard work by the sub-contractors. The contractor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance work after construction, but it is not being done effectively.
