Heavy Rains Hit Hyderabad
On Friday, heavy rains hit parts of Hyderabad, causing waterlogging on many streets. This created problems for shoppers preparing for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
Several colonies, especially in low-lying areas, were flooded. Water reached the doorsteps of many homes due to excess discharge from nearby nala (drainage channels) and water bodies. Areas like Punjagutta, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Banjara Hills, and Mehdipatnam experienced heavy rainfall, which was accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. Though the rain didn’t last long, it was intense, and light showers continued afterward.
The rain, combined with the ongoing festive season, led to traffic jams in several parts of the city. Areas like Jubilee Hills Check Post, Khairatabad, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, and Begumpet were particularly affected. Hyderabad Traffic Police were seen diverting vehicles and advising drivers to take alternative routes to avoid congested areas.
In response to the waterlogging, Ashok Reddy, the Managing Director of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), inspected several affected areas.
Earlier in the day, Hyderabad had clear skies and sunny weather, with temperatures between 30°C and 32°C. However, by the late afternoon, clouds gathered, bringing heavy rain in the evening.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a similar weather pattern in the coming days, with short rain spells expected in the evenings. Daytime temperatures are expected to be between 28°C and 30°C until September 9.
Recent data shows Hyderabad has received 677.9 mm of rain, which is 38% more than the usual 489.7 mm. Khairatabad recorded the highest increase, with 802.5 mm of rain, 58% above the normal 508.2 mm.
