Hyderabad: On Thursday, Telangana BJP State President N. Ramchander Rao spoke to the people in BC Colony, Yadadri Town. He highlighted the efforts of the Modi government to boost India’s handloom sector, inspired by the spirit of the Swadeshi movement.
As the main speaker, Rao explained that National Handloom Day began on August 7, 1905, marking the start of the Swadeshi movement. This movement encouraged boycotting British products and supporting local crafts. He urged everyone to wear handloom clothes, calling it a duty to appreciate the skill and hard work of the weavers.
Rao criticized the Telangana state government for neglecting handloom workers, pointing out that the central government is taking active steps. He mentioned the Modi government’s initiatives like setting up clusters and providing Mudra loans to support weavers, contrasting this with the state’s lack of action.
Sharing personal experiences, Rao recalled buying handloom clothes from Bhuvanagiri, Gadwal, and Narayanpet during his student and legislative years. He expressed worry about the industry’s decline due to the popularity of foreign fabrics. Rao noted the tragic suicides of weavers in Sircilla over the past decade, insisting on the need for change.
