Hyderabad: The Sanskrit Academy of Osmania University and Raj Bhavan celebrated World Sanskrit Day on Monday at the Raj Bhavan Community Hall.
Many Sanskrit scholars, teachers, and students attended, creating a vibrant atmosphere of cultural pride and learning.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma of Telangana was the Chief Guest. Prof. M. Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, was the Guest of Honour. Around 170 Sanskrit students from different Gurukulams participated in Vedic chanting and Bhagavad Gita recitations.
A key moment was the release of “Yoga Chintamani,” an 18th-century yoga text. The Sanskrit Academy carefully edited this critical edition, which the dignitaries unveiled, marking a significant achievement.
Prof. Kumar praised the Academy’s work and encouraged young people to study Sanskrit seriously. He stressed the importance of Sanskrit for understanding the country’s history, culture, and scientific heritage. He also discussed research opportunities in Sanskrit and urged students to revive the language’s ancient glory.
He promised full support for the Academy’s academic efforts and urged society to explore the contributions of ancient Indian scientists.
Governor Varma spoke about Sanskrit’s importance today, especially concerning nationalism. He used examples from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to show how these epics promoted national values without advocating invasion.
He mentioned renowned scholars like Panini, Aryabhata, and Bhaskaracharya, highlighting their works’ lasting impact. Bhavani Shankar, Joint Secretary of Raj Bhavan, and a key event organizer, was also a Guest of Honour. Prof. Nilakantham, former Director of the Sanskrit Academy, recited Sanskrit verses and shared updates on the Academy’s progress.
The event, filled with traditional recitations and scholarly exchanges, was led by Prof. Penna Madhusudan, Director of the Sanskrit Academy. It showcased Sanskrit’s enduring role in India’s intellectual and cultural life, inspiring both experienced scholars and young students.
