Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi has filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-poll representing Telangana. He submitted his papers in the presence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and other key party members.

On Monday, Singhvi, who is also a well-known advocate, officially filed his nomination for the by-poll scheduled for September 3. He handed in four sets of nomination papers to the returning officer, Upender Reddy. Each of these sets was backed by the signatures of 10 MLAs.

The by-poll became necessary after the seat held by K Keshava Rao fell vacant due to his resignation. Singhvi is expected to be elected unopposed as the BRS party has chosen not to field any candidates, as they do not have enough support to win. The deadline for submitting nominations is August 21. If no other candidate submits a nomination, Singhvi will automatically be declared the MP. However, if a contest does happen, the election will take place on September 3, along with the election for 12 other seats in nine different states.

Singhvi, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and a senior spokesperson of the AICC, recently faced defeat in Himachal Pradesh during the Rajya Sabha elections, losing to BJP’s Harsh Mahajan by a draw of lots.

In Telangana, where Congress is the ruling party, Singhvi’s victory is almost certain. The Congress party, which holds 75 seats in the State Assembly, including ten members who switched from BRS and one from the CPI party, is taking this election seriously as part of its broader strategy to secure as many seats as possible at the national level.
