A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles in the Delhi NCR region has found that many households are experiencing cases of viral fever. About half of the households surveyed reported that one or more members were showing symptoms of COVID, the flu, or viral fever. The survey also discovered that a majority of individuals have stopped following COVID protocols and are not getting tested, which increases the risk of a new COVID variant spreading undetected in the area. This new variant, called BA.2.86 or Pirola, has caused concern globally, particularly in the USA and the UK.

The survey included responses from over 9,000 residents in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Of these respondents, 61% were male and 39% were female.

According to the survey data, 50% of respondents stated that no one in their household was currently sick. However, 33% mentioned that one family member had symptoms of COVID, the flu, or viral fever, while 17% reported that 2 to 3 individuals in their household were affected.

Comparing this data with a survey conducted a month earlier in mid-August, where only 21% reported symptoms in their households, it is clear that the number of affected households has significantly increased.

While some medical experts suggest that illnesses like swine flu and RSV may be contributing to the rise in cases alongside viral fever and COVID, it is evident that these illnesses are spreading. The impact of COVID on immunity levels over the past few years may be making people more susceptible to falling ill compared to before the pandemic.

Based on the survey findings, it is recommended for residents of Delhi NCR to prioritize wearing masks and maintaining social distance, especially when they know someone at school or work is sick. These individuals could potentially transmit the virus to others. Additionally, the government should consider providing free RT-PCR testing to the public and conducting more genome testing. Detecting a new COVID variant in Delhi NCR as soon as possible is essential to prevent its widespread transmission.
