Hyderabad has introduced new rules to make vehicles more visible at night, aiming to improve road safety. The Telangana government now requires vehicles to use approved reflectors, reflective tapes, and rear marking plates to reduce accidents in low visibility conditions. This move supports Supreme Court guidelines on road safety.
Accidents often occur at night because heavy vehicles are parked on roads or move slowly, causing collisions. The new rules demand that all vehicles use reflective materials meeting national standards like AIS 057, AIS 090, and AIS 089. These apply to two-wheelers, three-wheelers, goods vehicles, commercial cabs, buses, tractors, and trailers. Vehicles not complying may not receive registration or fitness certificate renewal.
To ensure quality, the Transport Department will use a QR-based Management Information System (MIS). Only reflective materials verified through this system will be accepted for registration or renewal. Manufacturers must use this QR-based system to track their products. Vehicle inspectors will check these QR codes during registration or fitness certificate renewal. Vehicles with factory-installed tapes from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are exempt from this process.
