Assam plans to produce its own energy: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a major Thermal Power Plant in Chirakuta, Charuwa Bakra, Bilasipara (Dhubri) could create up to 10,000 jobs once it’s up and running.

Dr. Sarma visited the planned Energy Park site in the Rakshasini region of the district during his tour of Goalpara. He inspected the land and instructed officials to speed up the project. The plant is part of the state’s broader plan to boost energy production and generate employment.

Speaking to the media, he also revealed that construction of the Goalpara Medical College would begin later this year. Land for the hospital is already being secured, and the project aligns with the government’s goal of improving healthcare infrastructure across Assam.

He shared his vision of making Assam a top destination for medical services. To support this goal, the state plans to build medical colleges in every district, ensuring better access to healthcare for all citizens.

Dr. Sarma also addressed environmental concerns in Goalpara. He noted increasing encroachments in forest areas and stressed the importance of planting Napier grass to reduce conflicts between people and wild elephants.

Regarding the thermal power project, he explained that it would not only produce electricity but also significantly boost local employment. About 25,000 workers will be hired during the construction phase, and an estimated 10,000 permanent jobs will be created once the plant becomes operational.

The new plant will cover around 2,500 acres. Its location is ideal—it’s close to the Gaurang River, with easy access by road and rail. The project marks a major step in Assam’s push towards energy self-reliance.

Dr. Sarma concluded by emphasizing that these developments reflect the government’s commitment to both economic growth and social welfare.
