Hyderabad: The announcement of the new Telangana BJP state president has been delayed. It was earlier expected by the end of April, but the decision is now likely in the second week of May.
According to senior party insiders, two main names are being considered for the role: N Ramachandra Rao, a former MLC, and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. Both leaders belong to the OBC category, which is seen as a key factor in the party’s selection process.
Other leaders such as Dharmapuri Aravind, MP from Nizamabad, and Eatala Rajender, MP from Malkajgiri, are also in the mix. However, party officials confirmed that Rao and Sanjay Kumar are the top contenders for now.
The BJP high command had planned to finalize the appointment by April 25 and make the announcement by April 30. But the recent Pahalgam terror attack disrupted those plans. Key leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other top BJP leaders were occupied with national security concerns.
Because of this, major internal decisions, including the Telangana leadership appointment, were put on hold.
Earlier, G. Kishan Reddy, the current state BJP president and Union Minister for Coal and Mines, and Dr. K. Laxman, MP and BJP Parliamentary Board Member, had both indicated that the decision would come by April’s end. That timeline has now shifted.
Sources say there is a “99% chance” the new Telangana BJP chief will be announced in the first week of May. However, if the security situation worsens or if other national issues take priority, the party may delay the appointment further.
In that case, Kishan Reddy could continue as state president until at least the end of May. The BJP leadership is carefully watching both internal party dynamics and external developments before making the final call.
