The Telangana State government has announced an ambitious infrastructure development plan for Hyderabad, which includes the construction of 29 elevated corridors, flyovers, and underpasses across the city. The government informed the Legislative Council on Monday that all projects are targeted for completion by March 2028. The announcement was made in response to a starred question raised by MLCs Mahesh Kumar Goud Bomma and Addanki Dayakar during the ongoing legislative session.
The Metropolitan Area and Urban Development (GHMC-2) Department confirmed that these proposals form part of a comprehensive strategy to tackle the rising traffic congestion in the state capital. The response, which received approval from the Chief Minister, outlined detailed project locations that have been placed before the House as an annexure. The government’s reply was a clear affirmative to questions about infrastructure development plans for the city.
According to official documents, the proposed works are based on a thorough traffic study and assessment of current traffic loads and congestion levels in Hyderabad. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has prepared an infrastructure development plan that focuses on improving arterial routes through elevated corridors, grade separators, flyovers, underpasses, and road expansion projects. Administrative sanction for several works has already been granted under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure (H-CITI) project through orders issued in December 2024.
The infrastructure plan covers multiple key traffic choke points across the city. Construction of flyovers and underpasses is planned at Jubilee Hills Check Post, Film Nagar, Road No. 45, and NFCL Junction. Multi-level flyovers will be built at Khajaguda, IIIT, Wipro Junction, Rethibowli, and Nanal Nagar. These locations have been identified as critical areas where traffic flow needs immediate improvement to reduce daily congestion faced by commuters.
Major corridor-level interventions include a six-lane bi-directional flyover from Miyapur to Alwyn Cross Road, underpasses connecting Lingampally to Gachibowli, and grade separators across critical junctions such as Mailardevpally, Shamshabad Road, and Kattedan. Road-widening projects have been proposed across several stretches, including corridors linking NH-65 to Ameenpur, Shastripuram to Engine Bowli, and multiple internal roads in the Old City and Jubilee Hills areas.
The plan also includes the construction of Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) and Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) at strategic locations. Projects have been proposed at Serilingampally, RK Puram, Patigadda, Chilkalaguda, and Aramgarh. These railway crossings have been identified as significant bottlenecks where grade separation will help improve traffic flow and reduce waiting times for vehicles.
A key highlight of the infrastructure push is the construction of three major elevated corridors. The first will run from Paradise Junction to Dairy Farm Road on NH-44, the second from Paradise to the Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Shamirpet, and the third from Banjara Hills Road No. 12 to Shilpa Layout. The estimated cost of these elevated corridors runs into several thousand crores of rupees, with the Paradise-Shamirpet stretch alone pegged at over Rs 4,200 crore.
The government stated that the projects are aimed at easing congestion, improving connectivity, and strengthening Hyderabad’s urban transport infrastructure in line with growing traffic demands. The comprehensive plan reflects the state’s commitment to addressing the infrastructure challenges faced by the rapidly expanding city and its increasing population of commuters and residents.
