Hyderabad: The BRS government had previously blocked the CBI from entering the state, halting any investigation into the Kaleshwaram Project. Now, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has decided to allow the CBI to take over this case, prompting the government to lift the earlier restriction.
According to the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, the CBI needs the state’s consent to operate there. In 2022, after two swamis were arrested for attempting to bribe four TRS MLAs, then-Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao withdrew the CBI’s permission to enter the state without approval.
The swamis allegedly offered Rs 100 crore to each MLA to switch to the BJP before the Munugode Assembly by-elections. The BJP leaders took the matter to the High Court, demanding a CBI investigation. To prevent central interference, the Telangana CM denied the CBI access.
Sources indicate the CM instructed State Home Secretary Ravi Gupta to reverse the order, allowing the CBI to conduct its investigation. The Supreme Court has mandated a CBI probe into the 2021 murder of advocate couple G Vamana Rao and Nagamani in the old Karimnagar district. The government must now comply, enabling the CBI to visit the crime scenes and question suspects in the murder case.
