Hyderabad is addressing the lack of teachers in its government medical colleges by hiring more staff and improving facilities. Just two days ago, the Medical and Health Services Recruitment Board announced 607 new assistant professor positions. Additionally, the Finance Department approved 714 more posts to be filled soon. Since some senior positions like Associate Professors and Professors cannot be directly recruited, the government is promoting current staff to fill these roles. They have relaxed certain rules to make this possible.
Around 231 Assistant Professors are moving up to become Associate Professors, and 308 Associate Professors are being promoted to Professors. This will help fill the gaps in teaching staff across the colleges. Moreover, 44 senior professors have risen to the position of Additional Directors of Medical Education, ensuring all 34 government medical colleges and teaching hospitals have regular Principals and Superintendents.
In terms of infrastructure, Telangana had only nine medical colleges in 2021. The previous government added eight more in 2022 and nine in 2023. In 2024, there were plans for eight additional colleges. Many of these new colleges lacked proper buildings and facilities, securing NMC approvals by using rented spaces. This rapid expansion from nine to 34 colleges led to a severe shortage of both staff and facilities.
To tackle these issues, the current government has devised a strategic plan. Medical College Monitoring Committees (MCMCs) are visiting each college to evaluate infrastructure, staffing, academic readiness, student amenities, and more. Their findings guide the government’s improvements for each institution.
Regarding new constructions, the government is building a new Osmania Hospital at Goshamahal, a long-awaited project. Modern hostels worth about Rs 127 crore are also being constructed for students at Osmania and Gandhi Medical Colleges. Under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Minister Damodar Raja Narsimha, these efforts aim to meet the needs and goals of medical professionals.
Previously, the government decided to extend the employment of 16,448 positions under the Director of Medical Education (DME) for another year to prevent staffing shortages. From April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026, this includes 4,772 contract roles, 8,615 outsourcing positions, 3,056 honorarium roles, and 5 multi-tasking staff. These cover all medical colleges, hospitals, nursing, and dental schools in Telangana, ensuring a comprehensive support network across various roles. Existing contracts will be renewed following the standard guidelines.
