Hyderabad: On Friday, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) took down an unlawful commercial building at Patny Centre in Secunderabad. This structure was over the Patny Nala, which had caused frequent waterlogging issues, as residents had complained. The nala was supposed to be 70 feet wide but had narrowed to 15-18 feet because of encroachments.
After a thorough check, HYDRAA removed the illegal buildings over the stormwater nala. The original width of the Patny Nala was restored. Officials from SCB plan to construct retaining walls along its edges. On Thursday, HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath and SCB Chief Executive Officer D Madhukar Naik inspected the Patny Nala together.
People from nearby areas were troubled by flooding during the rainy season due to the nala overflowing. They reported that illegal constructions like shops and washrooms had reduced the nala’s width to 15-18 feet.
Residents from Paigah Colony, Patny Colony, Viman Nagar, BHEL Colony, and Indiramma Nagar approached the HYDRAA Commissioner about the encroachment issue. They noticed a large amount of debris at the Patny Nala. When the demolition started, many locals gathered at the site, where police were present.
After the demolition, residents were extremely happy and thankful. They believe this action ends years of hardship, with about 30,000 families expected to benefit from better drainage and less flooding.
