Hyderabad is facing a challenging situation as the Himayat Sagar floodgates have been opened due to rising water levels. This has led to increased water flow near the Musi River, causing concern for residents in low-lying areas.
Heavy water flow is affecting roads in Puranapul and Moosarambagh. People living along the riverbanks are worried and preparing for potential flooding. The opening of the Himayat Sagar gates has halted traffic on Moosarambagh, Jiyaguda-Puranapul, and Chaderghat bridges.
The Musi River is receiving large amounts of water from upstream. Residents in low-lying areas such as Malakpet, Kishanbagh, Jiyaguda, Puranapul, MGBS, Chaderghat, and Golnaka have been alerted.
In Malakpet and Chaderghat, some areas are flooded, and water is flowing over the lower bridge. Water has entered homes in Moosa Nagar, Padma Nagar, and Shanker Nagar, leading to the evacuation of over 60 families to safer locations.
Relief centers have been established at Malakpet Circle – City Model School, Padma Nagar Community Hall, Afzal Nagar Community Hall, Masjid at Shankar Nagar, and Arundhati Community Hall in Goshamahal Circle to assist those affected.
Residents have suffered property damage, with vehicles and electronics destroyed. “Our homes were flooded, and everything inside was ruined,” said Mohammed Sarwar, a local resident. Rajeshwari from Padma Nagar added, “We managed to grab a few essentials before moving to safety, but everything else is damaged.”
After water was released into the Musi River, authorities closed the Jiyaguda road, the lower bridge at Chaderghat, and Moosarambagh bridge as a safety measure. The Moosarambagh bridge had already been closed earlier due to heavy rainwater inflow.
Traffic police have set up barricades to block vehicles from using the Moosarambagh and Puranapul bridges. The Outer Service Road is also closed. In PNT Colony, where water affected homes, residents have been relocated by officials.
Officials visiting the flood-hit areas have advised the public to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel outside their homes.
