The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is preparing to open the much-awaited Mehdipatnam skywalk to the public by late February or March this year. Officials confirmed that final cable and finishing works are currently underway at the site. The ₹32.47 crore project, which has been under construction for nearly two years, is now in its final stages with all major works completed and only minor tasks remaining.

The Mehdipatnam junction serves as one of Hyderabad’s busiest traffic corridors, handling lakhs of vehicles daily. The junction witnesses the movement of approximately 1,600 Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) buses every day. It connects critical routes towards Moinabad, Narsingi, Pargi, Shankarpally, Tandur and Vikarabad, while also linking city routes to LB Nagar, Uppal, Charlapally, Dilsukhnagar and Hayatnagar.

The location also functions as a vital access point to major IT and financial districts including Hitec City, Raidurg, Manikonda, Narsingi, Kokapet and Nanakramguda. Heavy pedestrian movement across this busy junction has resulted in frequent accidents and traffic congestion over the years, making the skywalk a necessary infrastructure addition for public safety.

The skywalk structure spans 340 metres from the Mehdipatnam bus stop to Defence land opposite the junction. The design includes 160 metres towards Asif Nagar police station and 180 metres towards Mallepally. Officials have designed the structure with an arch-style elevation and upgraded features, drawing inspiration from the successful Uppal skywalk, which has helped ease traffic congestion and emerged as a popular public recreation spot.

The infrastructure features five entry and exit points strategically placed for easy access. The walkways measure between 4 to 5 metres in width, ensuring comfortable pedestrian movement. To facilitate accessibility, the skywalk includes 12 elevators, with each elevator capable of carrying up to 20 persons at a time, making it convenient for elderly citizens and differently-abled individuals.

Beyond its primary function as a pedestrian crossing facility, the skywalk has been designed as a multi-purpose public space. Officials have allocated 21,061.42 square feet of space for commercial use, including coffee shops, snack stalls and food courts. Seating arrangements are also being provided throughout the structure, transforming it into a space where families and young people can spend leisure time safely above the busy traffic below.

HMDA officials stated that all major construction work has been completed, with teams now focusing on final touches including cable installations and finishing works. The authority expects to throw open the skywalk to public use by the end of February or early March, providing a safe crossing solution for thousands of pedestrians who navigate the dangerous Mehdipatnam junction daily.
