Hyderabad Metro passengers will have to pay more starting this Saturday, as a new fare system comes into effect. The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has raised both the minimum and maximum ticket prices.
The minimum fare will now be ₹12, up from the earlier ₹10. The maximum fare has increased to ₹75, compared to the previous ₹60.
These changes were suggested by the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), which reviewed the pricing based on affordability and the financial needs of the service. The committee, led by a former High Court judge, submitted its recommendations on January 25, 2023, under the guidelines of the Metro Railways (Operations & Maintenance) Act, 2002.
Here’s the new fare breakdown:
– Up to 2 km: ₹12
– 2 to 4 km: ₹18
– 4 to 6 km: ₹30
– 6 to 9 km: ₹40
– 9 to 12 km: ₹50
– 12 to 15 km: ₹55
– 15 to 18 km: ₹60
– 18 to 21 km: ₹66
– 21 to 24 km: ₹70
– Above 24 km: ₹75
HMR thanked riders for their continued support and urged them to cooperate with the new pricing. Officials stressed that the revised fares are necessary to sustain and improve the quality of metro services in the city.
However, the hike has sparked criticism. Many daily commuters, especially those traveling longer distances, are upset about the added burden. Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints, with users calling it a blow to their already tight budgets amid rising living costs.
Despite the backlash, the Hyderabad Metro remains a vital travel option for thousands of professionals and daily travelers. Its growing popularity stems from its speed, convenience, and ability to avoid the city’s worsening traffic jams. As more people shift to metro travel, maintaining high-quality service has become a top priority for HMR.
