The Musi River Development Corporation (MRDCL) has accelerated the preparation of a comprehensive Development Project Report (DPR) for the ambitious Musi River development project. Officials announced that the DPR will be released within two weeks, marking a significant milestone in the state government’s efforts to transform the river corridor.
The momentum has picked up following the recent success of the Global Summit organized by the Telangana government. The positive response from the summit has energized officials to fast-track the development plans for one of Hyderabad’s most significant water bodies.
MRDCL MD Narasimha Reddy recently conducted a detailed review meeting with the consultancy firm handling the project. During the meeting, he emphasized the need to prioritize the first phase of development and set clear timelines for deliverables.
The first phase of the project will focus on developing a 9-kilometer stretch of the river from Himayatsagar to Bapughat via Kismatpur. The consultancy company has agreed to submit the DPR for this initial segment within the stipulated timeframe.
According to engineers involved in the project, the development plan includes multiple components aimed at transforming the river corridor into a modern recreational and environmental asset. The DPR incorporates roads, greenery, parks, and entertainment-related structures along the riverbanks.
A key feature of the project is the planned construction of check dams at Kismatpur and other strategic locations. These structures are specifically designed to facilitate water sports activities, adding a recreational dimension to the river development initiative.
One of the significant advantages of the first phase is the minimal land acquisition requirement. Officials have confirmed that land acquisition is not required for most of the development work in this phase. Encroachments along the designated stretch are reported to be minimal.
The project can be completed with the acquisition of just 50 to 60 properties, making it more feasible and less contentious compared to large-scale infrastructure projects that typically require extensive land acquisition.
The financial aspect of the project has already been secured. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide direct funding for the Musi River development project. This commitment from a major international financial institution adds credibility and ensures the availability of necessary resources.
The next steps involve the state government’s approval of the DPR once it is submitted by the consultancy. After receiving state approval, the report will be forwarded to the ADB for final clearance and fund disbursement.
MRDCL officials expressed confidence that experts will release funds for the work once the DPR is reviewed and approved by both the state government and the Asian Development Bank. The streamlined approval process is expected to ensure quick implementation of the project.
The Musi River development project is part of the Telangana government’s broader vision to rejuvenate urban water bodies and create sustainable recreational spaces for citizens. The project aims to transform the river into an environmental and tourism asset for Hyderabad.
