Hyderabad is gearing up for a major musical celebration. On May 4, more than 1,000 musicians from across Telangana will come together at LB Stadium to honor the 258th birth anniversary of Tyagaraja, one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music.
The event is being organized by the Telangana Sangeet Natak Academy. The grand celebrations will start at 10:30 a.m. and will feature artists from every district in the state.
Academy Chairperson Prof. (Dr.) Alekhya Punjala spoke to the media ahead of the event. She shared that this year’s celebration will be larger than ever. The goal is to make it an annual tradition in Hyderabad, similar to the famous Tyagaraju Aradhana Utsavalu held in Thanjavur.
The academy has already hosted similar events for Bhakta Ramadasu and Nataraja Ramakrishna, which also saw strong participation from musicians. Alekhya emphasized the importance of preserving India’s rich heritage of devotional and classical music.
Several dignitaries are expected to attend the celebration, including Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Tourism Minister Jupalli Krishna Rao. The event will also feature performances by Padma Shri awardees such as Dr. Shobha Raju, Dr. Yalla Venkateswara Rao, Sister Dr. Haripriya, Dr. Kovala Shantha, and Prema Ramamoorthy. These renowned artists will perform in the Tyagayya Gana Goshti, inspiring the next generation of classical musicians.
Dr. Alekhya described Tyagaraja Swamy’s contribution to Carnatic music as “priceless and eternal.” She said this celebration is a way to recognize his legacy and promote cultural values through music.
Musicians who have already registered are ready to perform, but those still interested can join directly at the venue.
In addition to this event, the academy will also organize musical performances during the upcoming Kaleshwaram Pushkaralu, starting May 15. For ten days, 24 music teams will perform at various locations as part of the religious festival.
This double celebration aims to blend culture, devotion, and music, while encouraging people to embrace India’s timeless musical traditions.
